What is it?:

Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is an herb best known for its naturally sedative effect, helping people fall asleep faster, improve their sleep quality, and spend more time in a deep sleep stage. It does so by increasing levels of a neuro-transmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which not only aids sleep but also helps to calm anxiety and stabilize/regulate the central nervous system. The improved GABA levels make it easier for the mind and body to relax, meaning Valerian root can also help to keep your stress levels down – significantly helping with daily stress management.

In addition to being a natural sedative, Valerian is also anti-spamodic. This means that it can ease cramping and spasms in muscles throughout the body and has a long tradition in Western herbalism of being used to ease menstrual cramping and pain.

A couple of precautionary notes: Valerian does has a sedative effect, so be smart about using it before doing things like driving (or anything else requiring your mind to be sharp and alert). Also, valerian can make some people feel nervous, anxious, and experience palpitations-- so try it first when there's nothing to get up the morning for the next day!

Valerian is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

What is it good for:

  • improving overall sleep quality
