FAQs: Herbal Medicine 101

What is herbal medicine, and how does it work?

Herbs are typically natural roots, barks, leaves, berries, mushrooms, and occasionally animal products that have been used for thousands of years to support the body. They're often called "adaptogens" because they help your body adapt to stress, trauma, and fatigue by activating natural healing processes.

What is TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic healing system that's been practiced for over 2,500 years. It views the body as an interconnected whole and focuses on restoring balance and supporting your body's natural ability to heal itself. TCM uses herbs, acupuncture, diet, and lifestyle practices to address the root causes of health concerns — not just symptoms.

Chinese herbal medicine is the specific practice of using herbs and herbal products to bring the body into balance. These herbs can be taken internally (tinctures, pills, capsules, teas, broths) or externally (plasters, oils, liniments, lotions, and more).

What's the difference between Chinese herbs and Western herbs?

While both traditions use plants for healing, they approach wellness differently:

Chinese herbs:

  • Focuses on restoring balance and harmony in the body as a whole
  • Herbs are usually used in carefully balanced formulas (with multiple herbs working together)
  • Often uses ingredients native to Asia, like reishi, astragalus, or goji berries

Western herbs:

  • Often targets specific symptoms or body systems
  • Herbs are used solo (typically only one or two in combination)
  • Uses herbs native to Europe and North American, like echinacea, chamomile, slippery elm, and nettle

The good news? You don't have to choose! Many people benefit from both traditions. At Root + Spring, we carry both Chinese herbal medicine and Western herbs.

What issues can herbal medicine help me with?

Chinese herbs can support a wide range of wellness concerns—from sleep and immunity to stress, digestion, energy, and pain relief. We also offer specialized formulas for men's and women's health, aging and beauty, brain health, and more.Herbs work best for supporting overall wellness, addressing chronic imbalances, and prevention. Are herbs safe?

When sourced responsibly and used appropriately, herbs have an excellent safety record backed by thousands of years of use. That said, it's smart to follow these guidelines when using herbal medicine or any supplement:

  • Always consult a healthcare practitioner if you're pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or managing a serious health condition to avoid potential interactions. If you are using herbs for your pet, consult your veterinarian first.
  • Quality matters. We source our herbs from trusted suppliers and use best practices when creating our own line of products.
  • Be sure to follow recommended dosages and instructions. More isn't always better with herbs, and taking too little won't help your symptoms. They work best when used as directed.
  • Listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, stop using it and consult a practitioner.

FAQs: Using Herbal Medicine

How much should I take?

Dosage will vary by product, and you'll find specific guidelines on each product label and description. It's important to follow the recommended dose—taking too little may not give you the results you're looking for, while more isn't always better with herbs.

If you're new to a formula, you can start with the lower end of the recommended range and adjust as needed. When in doubt, contact us or consult with an herbalist.

How often should I take my herbs?

How often you take your herbs depends on the product and what you're working toward. For instance:

For prevention or chronic concerns (sleep issues, immunity, stress, hormonal balance): Take consistently, typically 2-3 times daily as recommended. Herbs work best when used regularly over time to support your body's natural balance.

For acute or as-needed issues (pain relief, colds, wounds, digestive upset): Follow the guidance on the bottle—these are designed to be taken as symptoms arise.

Check your product label for specific timing recommendations. Have questions? Contact us at help@rootandspring.com or consult with your herbalist.

How long does it take to see results?

How quickly you respond to your formula will vary based on what you're addressing and how long the imbalance has been present. But, here are some general results you can expect:

Acute issues (cold symptoms, occasional digestive upset, minor pain): You may notice relief within hours to a few days.

Chronic or deeper imbalances (sleep patterns, hormonal issues, immunity building, stress management): Results typically develop over 2-4 weeks of consistent use. Think of herbs as nourishing and rebuilding your body over time, not a quick fix.

Prevention and maintenance: Benefits may be subtle—you might simply notice you're getting sick less often or bouncing back faster from stress.Be patient and consistent. Herbs work with your body's natural rhythms, and lasting change takes time.

Should I take herbs with food or on an empty stomach?

In general, most formulas are meant to be taken with food.

  • Tinctures: Can be taken with or without food. Adding to tea or water is perfectly fine.
  • Capsules/tablets: Often best with food to aid absorption and prevent any stomach sensitivity.
  • Soups and broths: These are food! Enjoy as a nourishing meal.

Some formulas have specific recommendations that you'll find on the bottle or packaging.

How do I use the Herbal Broth + Soup Kits?

Each kit comes with detailed instructions, but the basic process is simple and prep only takes 5 minutes! The result is a nourishing, therapeutic broth that's been a staple of Chinese wellness for generations. Think of it as bone broth elevated with powerful herbs.

Once your broth is made, you can drink it as is or use it to cook your favorite recipes. It's particularly useful when making soup, stews, curries, oatmeal, rice, or any other broth-based dishes.

FAQs: Our Products

Where do you source your herbs?

We source herbs from their traditional growing regions where these plants have been cultivated for centuries. This honors the terroir and expertise of the regions where these herbs originated. For many TCM products, this means sustainable farms in Asia. For Western herbs, this could be Europe or North America.

Are you based in the USA?

Root + Spring is a small, woman-owned business based in the United States. We were founded by a family with deep roots in traditional Chinese herbalism, and we've grown into a trusted modern herbal shop serving customers worldwide. While some of our products or ingredients come from overseas, our tinctures are formulated in small batches right here in the USA, giving you the best of both worlds: authentic heritage and American-made quality.

Are your products and packaging eco-friendly?

Yes, within the constraints of being a small business. For instance, we use glass amber bottles when possible (better for preservation and recycling), we reuse materials whenever we can, and make eco-conscious choices about packaging. We work with suppliers who are also dedicated to making sustainable choices whenever possible.

Do your tinctures contain alcohol?

Yes, and for good reason: it makes the products most effective. We use alcohol decoction because it's the most effective method for extracting and preserving the active compounds in herbs. Alcohol pulls out therapeutic properties that water alone can't access, ensuring maximum potency.

If you're concerned about alcohol content: The alcohol content is relatively small per dose (usually a dropper full), and you can further reduce it by adding your tincture to hot tea or hot water. The heat causes the alcohol to evaporate while leaving the beneficial herbal compounds intact.

Are your products organic? Gluten-free?

We source organic and wild-harvested herbs whenever possible. However, some traditional herbs aren't always available organically due to long harvest cycles—for instance, certain roots take years to mature, and those farmers may use moderns practices (like pesticides) to prevent losing entire harvests.

Many of our products are naturally gluten-free, but if a product does contain gluten it will be specified on the product description and on the label.

Why are certain herbs or products unavailable sometimes?

Availability can shift based on natural harvest cycles. Some herbs take years to grow and aren't always available from our trusted sources. When this happens, we may temporarily remove products or suggest alternatives with similar therapeutic properties. We'd rather wait for quality herbs than substitute with inferior options.

Do herbs have expiration dates?

Technically, no — herbs don't expire in the way that food spoils or becomes harmful. However, FDA regulations require expiration dates on products like herbal supplements anyway (which is typically 4 years from production). Still, it's best to keep your herbs in a cool, dark place (like a cupboard) to maintain their freshness as long as possible.

It's important to know that over time, herbs may gain or lose potency. Interestingly, liquid tinctures and liniments often become more potent as compounds continue to concentrate.

Additionally, some herbs are only harvested every 4-5 years, so products may seem older if we are nearing a new harvest cycle (even though they are still safe and effective).

Do you provide Certificates of Analysis (COA)?

Due to our small-batch production model, we don't provide COA testing for our tinctures (which can cost hundreds of dollars, even on just 24-48 bottles). To keep prices as low as possible for you, we work directly with trusted manufacturers and distributors to ensure high quality through our sourcing relationships rather than per-batch testing.

FAQs: Herbs for Pets

Can I use Root + Spring products for my pet?

Yes! Herbal products like our tinctures and Yunnan Baiyao can also support our pets' wellness. Chinese herbs have been used in veterinary care for centuries and can be beneficial for dogs, cats, and other animals.

Important: Always consult with a holistic veterinarian before giving herbs to your pet. Dosing for animals is different from humans and depends on your pet's size, species, and health condition. What's safe for you may not be appropriate for your pet without proper guidance.

How do I dose herbs for my pet?

Dosing depends on several factors:

  • Your pet's weight
  • Species (dogs vs. cats vs. other animals)
  • The specific product and concentration
  • What you're addressing
  • Other medications or supplements your pet is taking

We strongly recommend working with a holistic veterinarian who can calculate the appropriate dose based on your pet's individual needs. General "per pound" guidelines exist, but professional guidance ensures safety and effectiveness.

Should I give my dog Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao should only be used under consult of a veterinarian. It is commonly used to extend the life of dogs (and cats) with bleeding cancers such as hemangiosarcoma or nasal cancer (nosebleeds). Some treatments for cancer, such as Chemotherapy promote bleeding. Additionally, Yunnan Baiyao may be used after surgeries and to support the healing of wounds.

What does Yunnan Baiyao do for dogs?

Yunnan Baiyao is commonly used to extend the life of dogs (and cats) with bleeding cancers. Yunnan Baiyao works by activating the platelet, which are the small blood components that help make the blood clot and stop bleeding.

My dog has hemangiosarcoma. What do I need to know about Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao is not a cure for hemangiosarcoma, but it can help manage internal bleeding and improve your dog’s comfort. Always consult with your veterinarian before starting Yunnan Baiyao to ensure the proper dosage and to monitor your dog’s response to treatment.

Red "Emergency Pill": In life-threatening bleeding episodes, the red "emergency pill" included in some Yunnan Baiyao packages can be given. This pill is designed for critical situations and should only be used under a veterinarian’s guidance.

Duration of Use: Yunnan Baiyao is typically used for short periods or during active bleeding episodes. Long-term use should be closely monitored by your vet, as prolonged use may impact liver or kidney function.

Veterinary Guidance Is Essential: Since hemangiosarcoma is a serious condition, it is critical to work with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dosage and treatment plan. Yunnan Baiyao is often used alongside other therapies, such as chemotherapy or surgery, to improve your dog’s quality of life.
