Frequently asked questions
What is the Chinese Herbal Broth and Soup Mix for Women?
It is a root + spring soup kit built around four classic blood-nourishing herbs, dong quai (Dang Gui), Sichuan lovage (Chuan Xiong), white peony (Bai Shao) and prepared rehmannia (Shu Di Huang). Together these four herbs make up Si Wu Tang, the Four Substances formula, one of the best known women's tonics in Chinese medicine. The mix is handcrafted in small batches in the USA and makes 4 hearty servings.
What is this women's herbal soup traditionally used for in Chinese medicine?
In Chinese medicine this blend is traditionally used to nourish and move the blood, support the female reproductive organs and calm the shen, or spirit. Many women enjoy it as a monthly tonic to support a regular, comfortable cycle and a more settled mood in the days before a period. It is also associated with supporting the liver and spleen, two organs Chinese medicine closely links to menstrual health.
When should I drink the women's broth during my cycle?
It is traditionally enjoyed the week after your period ends, which is when the mix is considered most beneficial. In Chinese medicine this is the time to rebuild blood after menstruation, so a nourishing soup fits naturally into that part of the month. Making a batch once a month at this point in your cycle is an easy way to build it into your routine.
Why did my herbal soup turn black?
That is completely normal. The prepared rehmannia (Shu Di Huang) in this mix is a very dark root, and as it simmers it turns the broth a deep black color. This is expected and the soup is safe to enjoy. Rehmannia is valued in Chinese medicine as a longevity herb that nourishes yin and blood, so the dark color simply means it has steeped into the broth.
How do I cook the Chinese Herbal Broth and Soup Mix for Women?
Full instructions are included in the package, and prep takes about 5 minutes. You combine the herbs with water and let the pot simmer so the roots can release their flavor and nutrients into the broth. We pack a whole dong quai root, root to tip, so give it a good long simmer. Until you cook it, store the mix in a cool, dry place. The bottom shelf of the refrigerator works well.
Is dong quai soup safe during pregnancy?
We do not recommend this soup during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your practitioner advises it. Dong quai and Chuan Xiong are traditionally used to move blood, which is why Chinese medicine practitioners use them cautiously in pregnancy. For the same reason, check with your doctor first if you take blood thinners or other prescription medicines, or if you have very heavy periods or a bleeding condition.
How many servings does the women's soup mix make?
Each package makes 4 hearty servings. Since it is traditionally enjoyed once a month in the week after your period, one package lines up well with one cycle for one person, or a single shared meal for a small household. If you want to enjoy it every month, keeping a couple of packages in your pantry makes it easy to stay consistent.
How is the women's broth different from the root + spring Stress Relief broth?
The women's broth centers on dong quai, Chuan Xiong, white peony and rehmannia, herbs traditionally used to nourish and move the blood and support the female cycle. The Stress Relief broth is based on Si Shen Tang, the four divinity soup, with Chinese yam, euryale seed, poria and lotus seed, which are traditionally used to calm the shen and strengthen the spleen. Choose the women's mix for cycle support and the Stress Relief mix for everyday calm.
