What it is:

The Chinese yam has been cultivated across parts of Asia for centuries for use as both food and medicine. In its dried form it is known as Shan yao and can be taken daily in porridge or tea to help gently nourish people recovering from long illness or who are otherwise having a hard time taking nourishment into the body. It is also used this way to address xiao ke, or "wasting and thirsting" syndrome.

As an ingredient in TCM formulas, it is used variously to promote healthy digestion, stop loose, watery stools, address dry cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, and help with various forms of leakage from the urinary system (e.g. spermatorrhea, frequent urination, and nighttime enuresis (wetting the bed).

What else you need to know:

Shan yao is a known as a digestive tonic herb that is astringent. This means that it tightens and strengthens lax tissues in the body. This in turn strongly suggests that taken as a daily tea, Shan yao can help repair tissue in the stomach lining that is porous and leaky.

Suggested usage:

For making tea-- steep roughly 5-10 grams of dried herb per cup of hot water for a good 10-15 minutes. For best results, first soak the slices in warm water for 15–30 minutes to soften them before making the actual tea. This helps release active ingredients more easily....

... and don't be afraid to add other herbs to your brew/porridge (e.g. dates, goji berries, white peony root, etc...)!!!

For medicine makers, the dosage recommendation for Shan yao is 10-30 grams in decoction, with a maximum of 250g.
