What is it?:

Codonopsis Root (Dang Shen) is a generally nourishing herb which builds qi, blood, and yin in the body. Great for fatigue, listlessness, poor digestion, or any situation of imbalance which requires nourishing and building up the body to rectify. It is often substituted for Ren Shen (Asian or Korean ginseng root) in formulas at a 3:1 ratio because it is cooler than ginseng and can be tolerated by people with significant heat in their pattern of imbalances.

What is it good for:

  • fatigue and listlessness
  • recovery from chronic illness
  • poor digestion
  • building up the body from a weakened state (e.g. old age or illness recovery

Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

  • tonifies blood, qi, and yin systemically

It is important to understand that Chinese herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
