What else you might like to know:

This is a classical TCM formula that has been used for centuries in the practice of Chinese Medicine to deal with bladder and kidney disharmony (long before antibiotics were a thing). That being said, it is important to note here that acute infection of the bladder/urinary tract is a serious matter– pain & symptoms lasting 24 – 36 hours, and/or pain radiating around to the lower back indicates possible kidney infection for which Western antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Secondly, It is also important to understand that Chinese herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ba Zheng San, the Dianthus Formula?

Ba Zheng San, often translated as Eight Herb Powder for Rectification and known in English as the Dianthus Formula, is a classical Chinese medicine formula used for centuries. root + spring makes it as a liquid tincture in a 1 oz glass bottle with a dropper, so you can add a small amount to a cup of water.

What is the Dianthus Formula traditionally used for in Chinese medicine?

In Chinese medicine Ba Zheng San is traditionally used to clear heat and drain dampness from the lower body and to support the healthy movement of urine. It has long been used when there is a pattern of damp heat in the bladder, with signs such as dark, scanty urine and a burning feeling.

What herbs are in Ba Zheng San tincture?

There are nine herbs. Dianthus (Qu mai), Clematis stem (Chuan mu tong), Talc (Hua shi), Plantago seed (Che qian zi), Knotgrass (Bian xu), Gardenia fruit (Zhi zi), Rhubarb root (Da huang), Juncus (Deng xin cao) and Licorice root (Gan cao). Most are cooling herbs that promote urination, and licorice harmonizes the formula.

How do I take the Dianthus Formula herbal tincture?

Shake well before each use. For the maintenance serving, stir 1 to 2 droppers, about half a teaspoon, into warm water or juice 2 to 3 times a day. The augmented serving is 1 full teaspoon 2 to 3 times a day. Warm water is the traditional choice and also lets some of the alcohol evaporate.

When should I see a doctor instead of using an herbal formula for urinary discomfort?

See a doctor promptly if pain or symptoms last more than 24 to 36 hours, if pain spreads to your lower back or sides, or if you have fever, chills or blood in your urine. These can be signs that something more serious is involving the kidneys, and Western medical care is appropriate. An herbal formula is not a substitute for that care.

Who should not take Ba Zheng San?

Do not use this formula if you are pregnant. It is a cooling, draining formula and contains rhubarb root, which can loosen the stools, so it is generally not meant for people who feel cold, have loose stools or are run down. Avoid it while breastfeeding unless a practitioner advises it, and check with your doctor if you take prescription medicines.

How long do people usually take the Dianthus Formula?

Chinese herbs work by gradually restoring balance, so formulas are often taken for longer than people expect, usually at least a month and sometimes more. How long depends on the person and the pattern being addressed. Cooling formulas like this one are usually taken for a defined stretch rather than indefinitely.

Does the Dianthus tincture contain alcohol, and how long does a bottle last?

Yes, it is an alcohol based tincture. To evaporate most of the alcohol, add your serving to hot water and let it sit a few minutes before drinking. One 1 oz bottle is about a 10 day supply at the suggested servings, less if you use the augmented serving.
