What is it?:
The Chinese Herb He Shou Wu is the dried tuber of the multiflowered (Chinese) knotweed plant (Polygonum multiflorum Thunb.). Literally translated as “black-haired Mr. He” (for the legendary fictional character who first used this plant to reverse the effects of aging), He Shou Wu has been used in China for at least two thousand years as a longevity tonic, and in modern times is most notably used to address premature hair loss (alopecia), premature graying hair, and other signs of premature aging.
What is it good for:
- Hair loss (alopecia) and premature graying of the hair
- weakness of the limbs/numbness in the extremities
- sore lower back/achy knees
- dizziness and tinnitus
- regulating abnormal menses/addressing abnormal uterine bleeding
Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:
- replenishes jing (essence)
- tonifies Liver Blood
- tonifies Kidney energy (Yin & Yang)
What else you might like to know:
Several published human clinical trials have supported the traditional uses of He Shou Wu. While the results vary among studies and individuals, over 60% of people who had hair loss (alopecia) experienced hair regrowth within 3 months after taking this herb. In animal studies with aging mouse models, it was shown to lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, to reduce brain pathological changes, and to promote learning and memory. It has also been shown to contain multiple anti-oxidants.
It is important to understand that Chinese herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
