What it is:
Huang Lian Su Wan, scientific name Coptis, or Goldthread, is renowned for treating the occasional spell of diarrhea, indigestion, or food poisoning. Most recently, studies by the U.S. National Institutes of Health has also shown that the major active component of Coptis extract lowers blood glucose, such as improvement of insulin sensitivity, increases insulin secretion and exerts antidiabetes effects via regulating gut microbiota.

Studies have shown that Coptis has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to treat gastrointestinal problems and protect against diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. It is a very cold herbal formula and can upset the spleen and stomach if taken for too long or in excess amounts.
- Take 4 pills, two times a day with warm water
- For severe cases, dosage may be increased to 4-8-pills every 2-4 hours, then reduced to a maintenance dose as the formula takes effect.
- May be used short-term for few days to a few weeks. Monitor for signs of spleen Qi deficiency.
