What it is:
Licorice root (Gan cao) is used in Chinese medicine to help improve digestive function and nutrient absorption (to combat fatigue and overall weakness), moisten the lungs and throat (to soothe dry cough and a sore, scratchy throat), and as a spasmolytic (to address muscle cramps, spasms, and pain of smooth or skeletal muscles, especially (but not limited to) in the abdominal region).
Licorice root is also a wonderful detoxification agent., used in Chinese medicine to soften the effects of certain herbs that can be a bit harsh on the body... it can also be used to mitigate the effects of food poisoning, exposure to herbicides and pesticide, drugs, and heavy metals (not an exhaustive list).
Safety Notes: Care must be taken when using this herb-- large doses (over 30g during a one week period) can create a sodium/potassium imbalance in the blood which could potentially create edema, trigger heart palpitations, and/or raise blood pressure.
Contraindicated for use for people who have hypertension, edema, hyperglycemic conditions, osteoporosis and general excess secretions.

What else you need to know:
Licorice root is an absolutely amazing herb-- but the idea is to use use small amounts over time to slowly build up the body. Also, the flavor is quite strong, so using too much in a preparation can quickly get overwhelming.
Suggested usage:
Simmer the licorice root in water for at least 30 minutes (3 - 10 grams is the range of dosage, not to exceed 30g in one week). Do not let the water achieve a rolling boil as this will break down the volatile oils you are trying to extract from the root tissue. You can also grind the root into powder and consume it that way.
Licorice root can exacerbate high blood pressure so monitor your blood pressure periodically if you are ingesting this herb regularly.
