What is it?:

Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) is a nourishing and strengthening plant extract that comes from the roots of a Peruvian plant of the Brassicaceae family which grows exclusively in the central Andes at high altitude. Also known as "Peruvian Ginseng", maca has been cultivated for more than 2000 years and is used as a food supplement and for its medicinal properties.

For starters, Maca root is very nutritious. It is high in protein (mainly in the form of polypeptides and amino acids), calcium, and iron; it also contains significant amounts of fatty acids (e.g. linolenic, palmitic, and oleic acids) as well as many other vitamins and trace minerals. In addition to its rich supply of these essential nutrients, maca also contains alkaloids, tannins, and saponins...

...but maca is perhaps best known as a sexual tonic for men; and while its reputation for enhancing libido and performance for males is well deserved, it is more than just that-- maca may also regulate the hormonal balance of the entire reproductive system for both males and females. According to Dr. Gary F. Gordon, M.D. (founder and president of the International College of Advanced Longetivity Medicine in Chicago), maca root may work by normalizing our steroid hormones like testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen-- this implies that

  • it balances the reproductive systems of both men and women
  • that it has the facility to forestall the hormonal changes of aging (e.g. ease menopausal symptoms)
  • it boosts sexual drive (for both sexes);
  • it may help improve fertility in women

All of this is not to say that maca is magical and a cure-all for sexual dysfunction or fertility issues; but as a part of a well-planned, guided supplementation regimen maca can produce amazing results!

What is it good for:

  • supports fertility and general reproductive health
  • increasing sexual drive
  • providing a wide array of nutrients to the body

What else you might like to know:

It is important to understand that herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
