What is it:

Milk Thistle Liquid Tincture comes from a plant native to the Mediterranean region in the plant family Asteraceae, which also includes other plants like sunflowers and daisies. It gets its name from the milky-white liquid that runs off of the plant’s leaves when they’re crushed. It is also known as St. Mary’s thistle, holy thistle and silybum.

Milk Thistle is best known as an aid to liver detox. The plant contains the flavanoid silymarin, which acts as an anti-oxidant that functions to inhibit the liver-damaging effects of free radicals that are produced from the metabolism of toxic substances such as ethanol, acetaminophen, and carbon tetrachloride... it has also been shown to have anti-fibrotic properties and also to inhibit toxins from binding to cell membrane receptors in the liver.... a mighty potent herb indeed!

More generally speaking, the liver helps remove toxicity and harmful substances from our blood, aids in hormone production, detoxifies the body, releases sugar into the bloodstream (in order to give our body steady energy), and secretes bile into our small intestine so fat can be absorbed from foods. You can see why liver problems and poor liver function can create so many seemingly unrelated problems, such as fatigue, poor digestion, hyper/hypo-glycemia, jaundice, and other conditions.

What is it good for:

  • assisting liver detox
  • promotes bile production
  • contains anti-oxidants

What else you might like to know:

It is important to understand that herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.

Frequently asked questions

What is milk thistle tincture?

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean and part of the same family as sunflowers and daisies. Its name comes from the milky white sap that runs from the leaves when they are crushed. Our root + spring tincture is a single-herb liquid extract in a 1 oz dropper bottle, made in the USA. It is also known as St. Mary's thistle, holy thistle and silybum.

What is milk thistle traditionally used for?

Milk thistle is best known as a liver herb. It is traditionally used to support the liver's natural detox processes and to promote healthy bile production, which helps the body digest fats. Because the liver plays such a central role in steady energy, digestion and hormone production, many people include milk thistle in a routine aimed at overall wellbeing.

What is silymarin in milk thistle?

Silymarin is the group of natural flavonoids found in milk thistle, and it is the compound the herb is best known for. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant, helping protect liver cells from free radicals produced as the body processes substances like alcohol and certain medications. It is the main reason milk thistle is so closely associated with liver support.

How do I take milk thistle tincture?

Shake the bottle well before each use. For a maintenance serving, dissolve 1 to 2 droppers, about half a teaspoon, in warm water or juice two to three times daily. For an augmented serving, take 1 full teaspoon two to three times a day in warm water or juice. Taking it at roughly the same times each day makes it easier to stay consistent.

How long should I take milk thistle before noticing a difference?

Herbs work by gradually restoring balance, so they usually take longer than pharmaceuticals. Plan on taking milk thistle for at least a month, and often longer, depending on you and what you are working on. Each 1 oz bottle is roughly a 10 day supply, so a month-long routine generally takes about three bottles.

Who should avoid milk thistle?

Because milk thistle belongs to the daisy family, people allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies may react to it. Avoid it during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your practitioner advises otherwise. If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor before starting, since herbs can affect how some drugs are processed by the liver. Children should only use it with professional guidance.

Is milk thistle a Chinese herb?

Milk thistle is a Western herb rather than a classical Chinese one, coming from the European and Mediterranean herbal tradition. We carry it alongside our Chinese formulas because it is one of the best known herbs for liver support, and it fits naturally with Chinese medicine's focus on the liver, the organ responsible for keeping qi flowing smoothly.

Does milk thistle tincture contain alcohol?

Yes, like our other herbal tinctures it is an alcohol-based liquid extract. If you prefer to reduce the alcohol, place your serving in hot water and let it sit for a few minutes so some of it evaporates before you drink it. Mixing it into juice is another easy way to soften both the alcohol and the slightly bitter, earthy taste of the herb.
