What it is:

Polygonatum odororatum is the Latin binomial for Fragrant Solomon's Seal rhizome (Yu zhu), which is an herb used in Chinese medicine to moisten the lungs. This makes it a lovely choice to gently sooth a dry cough, especially when accompanied by hoarseness and/or sore throat. To use this herb in this way, one would make a decoction, which means you would very gently simmer the herb in water for 20 - 60 minutes, strain, and drink like tea.

This herb also generates body fluids and nourishes the stomach; and like the Chinese yam/Shan yao, it can be taken daily in tea or porridge as a general nutritive tonic (especially when the person is having trouble taking in and assimilating nourishment due to general debility). It is also taken this way to address xiao ke ("wasting and thirsting syndrome").

Which concerns is it good for?

✔ general nourishment for those in a weakened state
✔ hoarseness of voice
✔ chronic dry cough

Key benefits:

- nourishes the body
- soothes the throat
- soothes chronic, dry cough

Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

- nourishes yin and moistens the Lung
- generates body fluids and nourishes the Stomach

What else you need to know:

You can use P. odoratum to moisten and nourish the joints as well. I do this by decocting it in water, adding equal parts burdock root and Bai shao. This forms the base of the tea, which I strain and then add to other herbs that specifically target the joints. This process adds a nourishing and healing quality to the medicine that is truly sublime... the point is that its use in your life is only limited by your own creativity-- so enjoy!

Suggested usage:

For making tea-- steep roughly 5-10 grams of dried herb per cup of hot water for a good 10-15 minutes... and don't be afraid to add other herbs to your brew/porridge (e.g. burdock root and White Peony root to add provide liver support and add an element of detoxification support to your medicine).

For medicine makers: Dosage recommendation is 10-15 grams in decoction; not recommended when there is stagnation present due to the accumulation of dampness in the Spleen
