What it is:

Processed Rehmannia is the dried root of the rehmannia plant (Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch) that has been soaked in millet wine, steamed until black, and dried again to be used for medicine.

This is a moistening and nourishing herb that builds blood and can help w/clinical presentations of blood deficiency-- presenting as pale, sallow complexion, anemia, dizziness, palpitations, and insomnia. It is also a treasured women's herb that can help with irregular menstruation and other gynecological concerns (rooted in blood deficiency).

This herb also builds yin (of the Kidney and Liver organ systems) and is the chief ingredient in classical TCM formulas that nourish this aspect of the body (e.g. Liu Wei di Huang Wan).

Which concerns is it good for?

✔ pale complexion, brittle nails, fatigue, anemia
✔ lower back pain, achy knees
✔ scant or absent menses (rooted in blood deficiency)

Key benefits:

- nourishes the body
- helps with certain gynecological issues

Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

- greatly nourishes and builds blood
- greatly tonifies yin of the Kidney (yin jing) as well as Liver Yin
- strongly tonifies the yin and is used to treat xiao ke

What else you need to know:

Processed rehmannia is a dense root that is considered "greasy and cloying" and can be hard on the digestion. So if you tend toward abdominal bloating and sluggish digestion, you would want to use this herb with caution-- you can still consume it, just be aware of how your body is handling it... It can also aggravate blood stagnation, so while it is a "treasured" woman's herb, it is not for everyone!

Suggested usage:
