What it is:

Sichuan Lovage (Ligusticum) - Chuan Xiong is an aromatic root with a long tradition of use in Chinese Medicine. Known as one of the classical "50 fundamental herbs" in Chinese Medicine, it is prized for its main property of invigorating blood circulation and is an herb of choice for use in traditional formulas addressing obstetric and gynecological disorders such amenorrhea and irregular menstruation, continuous postpartum bleeding, and many manifestations of pain associated with menses (that have blood stagnation and cold as part of the root problem).

The invigorating property of this herb also makes it useful for addressing headache pain (including headaches associated with menstruation), joint pain & stiffness (the kind aggrevated by cold & damp weather) as well as pain form traumatic injury (w/bruising and swelling).

The use of this herb is not recommended for use during pregnancy; also, use thoughtfully/sparingly if you run "hot & dry" and use with caution of you are taking anti-platelet/anti-coagulant pharmaceuticals.

Which concerns is it good for?

✔ dysregulated menses (especially w/pain that gets better w/heat)
✔ some types of headache pain
✔ pain, swelling, and bruising from traumatic injury
✔ joint pain and stiffness (aggravated by cold, damp weather)

Key benefits:

regulates menses
- relieves pain

Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

- activates qi and blood circulation; breaks blood stasis
- dispels wind and relieves pain

What else you need to know:

Sichuan Lovage root is best used by adding it to formulas/recipes that contain nutritive, tonic herbs as the ingredient that gets all those heavier substances moving through the body. This doesn't mean that you need to cook up classical TCM formulas on the stove, but you might use it, for example, as an ingredient in a winter soup or stew just to help get your qi and blood moving a little more energetically in the body.

Suggested usage:

Simmer approximately 3 - 10 grams of the raw root per pint of water for 20-60 minutes. Do not let the water come to hard boil (this will destroy many of the constituents you want in the decoction).
