Frequently asked questions
What is Liang Cha?
Liang Cha, also called Lerng Cha, means cooling tea in Chinese. It is a traditional herbal brew made to cool the body and replenish fluids, especially in hot weather. Our Sweet Autumn Cooling mix is a naturally sweet version, a bit like the Chinese answer to Southern sweet tea, made from six herbs and fruits that are slow simmered into a pitcher.
What is Sweet Autumn Cooling tea traditionally used for?
In Chinese medicine this blend is said to clear Lung heat, nourish the Lung and Spleen meridians, and replenish fluids. People traditionally reach for it on hot days, when they feel dried out or overheated, when the throat feels scratchy, or as a gentle daily drink to support digestion and keep the body cool and hydrated from the inside out.
What is in the Sweet Autumn Cooling tea mix?
There are six ingredients. Dried monk fruit (Luo Han Guo), baby chrysanthemum buds (Ju Hua), dried Asian pear (Ya Li), bitter almond (Bei Xing Ren), sweet almond (Nan Xing Ren), and dried longan (Long Yan Rou). There are no additives, preservatives, or unlisted ingredients, and it is handcrafted in small batches in the USA by root + spring.
How do I brew Liang Cha at home?
Brewing instructions come in the package, and prep takes about 2 minutes. Unlike a teabag, these whole herbs are meant to be slow simmered in water so their minerals and other goodness fully extract. One mix makes a full pitcher of about 8 cups. You can drink it hot, or chill it in the fridge and serve it cold.
Why is this tea sweet without added sugar?
The sweetness comes from Luo Han Guo, or dried monk fruit, which is said to be around 300 times sweeter than sugar. Longan, Asian pear, and baby chrysanthemum round out the flavor, so the pitcher tastes gently sweet and floral with nothing added. Monk fruit has also been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to nourish the lungs and throat.
How long should I drink Sweet Autumn Cooling tea?
One mix makes a single pitcher, and we suggest enjoying it daily over about a week to get a feel for how it suits you. Chinese herbal teas are food as medicine, gentle and cumulative rather than instant. Store the dry mix in a cool, dry place, and the bottom shelf of the refrigerator works well.
Who should avoid this cooling herbal tea?
Bitter almond (Bei Xing Ren) should only be consumed after boiling, so always simmer the mix as directed and never eat the kernels raw. Skip it if you have a nut or apricot allergy. Because it is a cooling blend, people who run cold may want smaller amounts. Avoid it during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a practitioner advises it, and check with your doctor if you take prescription medicines.
Does Sweet Autumn Cooling tea have caffeine?
No. There are no tea leaves in this blend, only fruits, flowers, and kernels, so it is naturally caffeine free and fine to sip in the evening. In fact, longan is traditionally said to promote restful sleep while replenishing blood and Qi, which makes a warm cup a pleasant way to wind down.
