What is it?:

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.,) is a delicious wild berry that is both nutritious and also packed with anti-oxidants. It has a very long tradition as a folk remedy of suppressing cough and is a common ingredient in cough syrups (especially for children). It can also help boost the immune system, especially in the first day or two of "catching a cold or flu" as it induces sweating (diaphoresis).

As well as containing an abundance of anti-oxidants (which help remove the free radicals that can cause damage to healthy cells), they also contain sterols, which some studies suggest can moderately reduce LDL levels; additionally, elderberries contain polyphenols, which have been shown to help control blood glucose levels.

What is it good for:

  • quiets cough
  • supports the immune system
  • may help regulate blood glucose levels

Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

  • dispels heat from the Lung
  • regulates Lung qi
  • release exterior (i.e. induces diaphoresis)

This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
