What is it?:

Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium / Berberis aquifolium) is an evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest. Its roots contain various alkaloids (most notably berberine) which stimulate digestive secretions in the stomach, liver and pancreas-- thus this herb is often used for poor digestion/food stagnation as well as for issues related to incomplete/sluggish digestion (e.g. chronic skin conditions, chronic pain & inflammation, chronic fatigue, etc...).

As noted, Oregon Grape contains berberine as a constituent and as such has anti-microbial properties (like goldenseal does); so the herb can be used as a topical for skin conditions and to fight infection.

What is it good for:

  • chronic skin conditions (e.g. psoriasis, eczema, acne, and skin ulcerations)
  • improves digestion
  • help the body w/systemic detox
  • systemic anti-inflammatory effects

What else you might like to know:

It is important to understand that herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
